The Art Deco Society of Los Angeles and the Grand Vision Foundation presented a unique opportunity to travel back in time to the glamour of yesteryear with the vintage fashion show: 30 Years of Pin-Up: 1927 – 1957.
Buzzine was on-scene behind-the-scenes prep, and later that evening as hundreds of guests and fashion-fanatics enjoyed the elegance of some 80 silhouettes featuring vintage evening, cocktail, lingerie, day dresses, and play- and bathing-suits. Ten models were accompanied by live piano music and words of wisdom and whimsy by emcee Annamarie von Firley as they sashayed down the runway.
In addition to original pieces and replicas (provided by reVamp, Ragg Mop, and Threads of Time) the lovely ladies also donned collector costumes previously worn in movies by divas such as Ava Gardner, Ginger Rogers, Ann Miller, Esther Williams, Jean Harlow and Bette Davis.
The Warner Grand Theatre is a lavish, art-deco theater opened to the public on January 20, 1931 with the film Goin’ Wild, during the magical decades for film in the 1920s and 1930s. Jack Warner called it “The Castle of Your Dreams.” The Warner Grand was a product of architect B. Marcus Priteca (who later unveiled Hollywood’s breath-stealing Pantages Theater) and interior designer A.T. Heinsbergen. Priteca is famous for three lavish art-deco palaces that were located in San Pedro, Beverly Hills, and Huntington Park.
The Warner Grand is the last of his original theaters left intact and has been undergoing gradual refurbishment after a thirty-year decline. Grand Vision Foundation completed an ambitious seat restoration campaign and is planning more restoration activities, including preservation of the damaged mezzanine ceiling, restoration of the exterior lobby under the marquee and occasional chandelier repairs. The next fundraising event is going to be in Portuguese Bend on April 18th at a splendorous private residence designed by architects Marmol & Radziner and featured on the cover of Architectural Digest Magazine.
Special thanks to Annamarie von Firley, Margot Gerber, and Taran Schindler for allowing Buzzine access to this special event.
