On Thursday, April 5, 2012, Red Bull hosted the Los Angeles leg of its four city Red Bull Curates art series. The event was held at LA's preeminent street art gallery, LAB ART, in the burgeoning La Brea Arts district*.
The Red Bull Curates project is an art competition wherein 20 emerging contemporary artists (in the case of the Los Angeles leg, predominantly street artists) are challenged to decorate a canvas-wrapped mini fridge in signature fashion. The twenty fridges from each city (Los Angeles, CA; San Francisco, CA; New York City, NY; Chicago, IL) are voted upon, and three finalists from each location advance to a final round.
The final round will be held at a group show in Miami, FL as part of Art Basel.
The Los Angeles field created some really cool pieces, and those that don't advance will be donated to favorite local establishments all over town (sort of like the angels or Gibson guitar sculptures), so be on the lookout. Beyond the work itself, Red Bull threw a proper party for the opening. We got some really fun atmosphere shots of patrons after three hours of Red Bull infused open bar.
To find out more about the project, check out Red Bull Curate's official site. You can also visit LAB ART any time.
*If "La Brea Arts District" catches on, we are totally going to claim that we coined it.
